Ante Novokmet was born on 9 June 1983 in Osijek. Primary school and II. Gymnasium he finished in Osijek. He graduated at the Josip Juraj Strossmayer University of Osijek, Faculty of Law Osijek in 2007 and obtained LLM degree. During his studies, he received a scholarship from the Croatian Ministry of Science and Education, and in 2004 he was awarded the Rector's Award.
He has been employed at the Faculty of Law in Osijek since April 2008 as an assistant, since July 2014 as a senior assistant-postdoctoral student, since May 2016 as an assistant professor, and since March 2021 as an associate professor at the Department of Criminal Law. In the period from 2009-2010. he accomplished internship at the County Court in Osijek. At the Faculty of Law in Osijek he participates in teaching the Criminal Procedure Law, International Criminal Law, Juvenile Criminal Law, Criminal Law - Clinic, European Union Criminal Law, Human rights and Criminal Justice at the Integrated University Law Study, Basics of Misdemeanor Law at the Professional Graduate Study of Public Administration and Basics of Criminal Procedure Law at the Professional Administrative Study Programme.
In September 2009, he enrolled in the Postgraduate Doctoral Study in Criminal Law at the Faculty of Law in Zagreb. The doctoral dissertation entitled "Judicial Review of Accusation" he defended cum laude at the Faculty of Law in Zagreb on 15 July 2014 under the mentorship of Prof. dr. sc. Zlata Djurdjevic.
As part of his scientific research work, he participated from 2011 to 2012 in the scientific project SUNICOP: Strengthening UNIversity Cooperation Osijek-Pécs. From 2015 to 2016 he was the principal investigator on the scientific project Harmonization of Croatian criminal procedure law with Directive 2012/29 / EU on the establishment of minimum standards, rights, support and protection of victims of crime funded by the Josip Juraj University Strossmayer in Osijek (IZIP-2014-137). From 2015 to 2019, he was a researcher on the scientific project Croatian Judicial Cooperation in Criminal Matters in the EU and the Region: Heritage of the Past and Challenges of the Future (CoCoCrim) funded by the Croatian Science Foundation. From 2020 to 2024, he is a researcher on the scientific project Systematic Approach to Consensual Justice Models in Croatian Criminal Procedure (NegJusCro), which is funded by the Croatian Science Foundation.
On several occasions he was a researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Criminal Law in Freiburg. He is the Executive Editor of the EU and Comparative Law Issues and Challenges Series (ECLIC).
He is the author and co-author of several articles that cover the area of criminal procedural law, European Union criminal law, human rights in criminal proceedings, comparative criminal justice, and rights of victims of crime.
He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Croatian Association for Criminal Sciences and Practice, and a member of the Board of Directors of Croatian Association for European Criminal Law and member of the International Association for Criminal Law (Association Internationale de Droit Penal, AIDP).
