“BRUNCH ROUNDTABLE:

Digitalisation in Legal Education & Legal Profession“

On 19th January 2023, the University of Aberdeen hosted a national multiplier event titled “BRUNCH ROUNDTABLE: Digitalisation in Legal Education & Legal Profession“. The event was organized in the hybrid format under the auspices of the DIGinLaw project, with the purpose of discussing digital trends and digital competencies in the legal education (Session 1) and the legal profession (Session 2), and best practices for acquiring them.

The event was organised and led by the Aberdeen DIGinLaw team: Dr Katarina Trimmings, Dr Patricia Živkovič, Dr Rossana Ducato and Dr Burcu Yüksel-Ripley. In Session 1, the team members presented their respective Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), which they developed as part of the DIGinLaw project. This was followed by a presentation by Dr Guido Noto La Diega from the University of Stirling, who is a member of the Expert Group on Artificial Intelligence and Data in Education and Training, established by the EU Commission, and a discussion on the topic “Ethical guidelines on the use of artificial intelligence and data in teaching and learning for educators”.

Session 2 was fully discussion-based and focused on digitalisation trends in the context of legal profession. The debate centred around three questions in particular:

  1. “What digital competencies and skills does the legal profession require from law graduates?”
  2. “What digitalisation trends have emerged in individual areas of legal practice?”
  3. “What best practices for advancing your and your team’s digital skills have you developed or adopted?”

The above questions led to a lively discussion, in which valuable insights were share by the participants, many of whom were legal practitioners.
