Student’s progression

Enrolment Conditions

Studies can be enrolled by candidates who

a) have completed the University Integrated Undergraduate and Graduate Study Programme in Law or the pre-Bologna four-year-graduate study programme of law (under the condition that they have enclosed a certificate or diploma on equalizing the obtained academic title in accordance with the applicable legal regulations), and have earned 300 ECTS credits during their previous education, with a grade point average 3.5 or higher. Exceptionally, the Study Programme can be enrolled by the candidates who have completed their previous level of education by earning a lower average grade (not less than 3.0), if they enclose obligatory recommendations of at least two professors and/or scientists from the corresponding scientific areas included in the Doctoral Study Programme;

b) have completed the Graduate Study Programme or the pre-Bologna four-year-graduate study programmes in the scientific area of social sciences (economics, politology and others) and have previously earned 300 ECTS credits with a grade point average of 3.5 or higher. Exceptionally, the Study Programme can be enrolled by the candidates who have completed their previous level of education by earning a lower average grade (not less than 3.0), if they enclose obligatory recommendations of at least two professors and/or scientists from the corresponding scientific areas included in the Doctoral Study Programme. In the enrolment procedure, the Council of the Doctoral Study Programme (respectively the committee empowered by the Council), shall determine course exams within the Integrated Undergraduate and Graduate Study Programme of Law that the candidate is obliged to pass, but the workload should not exceed 30 ECTS.

c) have completed postgraduate scientific (magister) studies in legal sciences or postgraduate scientific (magister) studies in other social sciences under the pre-Bologna legal regulations, have completed specialist studies or have already enrolled in postgraduate doctoral studies in the field of legal science or other social sciences at other faculties in Croatia or abroad. While enrolling the stated candidates in the Doctoral Study Programme of Law, the Council of the Studies, or a special committee empowered by the Council shall, in accordance with regulations and enactments of the University, for every single candidate determines under which conditions and in which semester they can be enrolled, taking into consideration their prior learning and the curricula of their prior studies, as well as which exams can be recognized in the process of enrolling in the Doctoral Study Programme in Law.

All candidates listed under a), b) and c) will pass an additional check of motivation related to the intended area of research in the doctoral study and the scientific justification of the proposed research.

Conditions for the second year of Studies

There are no special formal conditions for enrolment in the second year of studies in terms of a minimal number of the necessary ECTS credits.

Preparation and public defence of the topic of the doctoral dissertation represents a crown of the second year of studies of the Doctoral Study Programme and is awarded 10 ECTS credits. Conditions for initiation of the procedure of entry for and public defence of the doctoral dissertation topic are defined by the curriculum of the Study Programme.

According to the curriculum, a candidate is obliged to pass exams in all the compulsory and elective courses from all previous semesters and fulfil other obligations defined by the curriculum of the Study Programme.

Conditions for the third year of Studies

For enrolment in the third year of studies, a student must have completed a public defence of the topic of his/her doctoral dissertation (topic defence) and earn a minimum of 120 ECTS credits.

Conditions for the attainment of the degree

Before defending the doctoral dissertation, the doctoral student must perform all study obligations and elective study obligations to participate at least once in:

  1. workshops for doctoral students
  2. doctoral colloquium
  3. scientific conference
