COURSE DESCRIPTION
Course content

Course objectives The objectives of this course are Acquiring advanced knowledge on fundamental human rights within the European Union. With special emphasise on prohibition of discrimination in the EU; protection of children's rights; the relationship between the EU Court of Justice and the European Court of Human Rights. Students will also acquire advanced knowledge on the protection of human rights before the ECtHR. Finally, the aim is developing advanced critical analysis skills and training students to analyse problems by applying legal rules to complex factual situations and developing of advanced critical analysis skills and enabling students to analyze conflicting interpretations of law and case law based on the application of rules of interpretation Course description After joining the European Union, the Republic of Croatia undertook to respect certain rules of the "game" which are defined both by the founding treaties (TEU and TFEU) and the practice of the Court of Justice of the EU. In this course, students will study to which extent the Republic of Croatia respects its commitments. Also, the aim of the course is to acquire advanced knowledge on the protection of human rights before the ECtHR. The course will include the study of the following thematic units: The evolution of human rights in the European Union; EU Charter of Fundamental Rights; The role of the Court of Justice in the protection of human rights in the EU; The relationship between human rights and fundamental EU market freedoms; Prohibition of discrimination in EU law; EU citizenship and fundamental rights; The child in EU law; Accession of the Union to the Convention on Human Rights; Relationship between the Court of Justice and the ECtHR; The future of human rights development in the EU.

Course learning outcomes

Recognize and independently define research problems related to the structure and powers of the Court of Justice of the EU and proceedings before the Court of Justice of the EU., Recognize and independently define research problems related to the European Court of Human Rights., In-depth critical analysis, evaluation and synthesis of scientific literature., Recognize, interpret and apply the legal rules of EU law in solving specific legal problems (hypothetical cases)., Conduct research by applying critical thinking and argumentation of legal problems and publicly present reasoned legal opinions supported by legal sources.,
