COURSE DESCRIPTION
Course content

The basic rules of academic writing in English are analyzed and applied. Students choose a topic, select sources, research and write a seminar paper in the English language. The field in which students formulate and research the topics for their seminar paper are social work and law as regards the units What Is Meant by Law?, Sources and Varieties of English Law, Statute Law in Britain, Legal Aid, Civil and criminal courts, From the Constitution of the Republic of Croatia, The Nature and Sources of American Federalism, Education, Employment, Social Policy, Demographics. Students are introduced to the rules of punctuation, word formation in English with an emphasis on forms typical of the language of the social work profession, along with the correct application of the grammatical structures (articles, word order in a sentence, tenses, modal verbs, passive voice).

Course learning outcomes

distinguish scientific discourse in English in the field of social work and law from that in general language, apply accurate terminology of social work profession and legal English when writing a seminar paper, summarize an English scientific text in the field of social work and law, correct application of grammatical and lexical structures typical for the English language of the social work and legal profession in writing and presenting the seminar paper, apply the methods of oral presentation in the presentation of the seminar paper on the chosen topic,
