COURSE DESCRIPTION
Course content

The content of the course is aimed at providing students with insights into the basics of the Croatian criminal justice system in order to develop knowledge of the basic contents of criminal and criminal procedural law as the main branches of public law. The main goal is also to acquaint students with the basics of criminology as an empirical social science that deals with the study of the causes and manifestations of criminal behavior. Specific objectives are to describe and analyze basic institutes of the general part of criminal and criminal procedural law, selected chapters of the special part and the most important theories about the causes and manifestations of punishable behavior. The content of the course includes the treatment of the following topics: 1. Principle of legality 2. Formal and material concept of a criminal offense 3. Omission 4. Reasons for excluding illegality 5. Guilt 6. Stages of the criminal offense 7. Complicity 8. Concurrence of the criminal offences and extended work 9. Introduction to sanctions 10. Selected chapters of the special part of criminal law 11. Substantive legal position of young people in Croatian criminal law 12. Introduction to etiological theories 13. Introduction to phenomenology 14. The concept of criminal procedure and criminal procedural law 15. Subjects of criminal proceedings 16. Stages of criminal proceedings 17. Facts and proving

Course learning outcomes

After completing the course the student will be able to: Define and interpret the basic institutes of general parts of criminal and criminal procedural law, Define and interpret individual criminal offenses and basic concepts related to criminal proceedings, Distinguish and apply individual criminal law institutes to specific examples from case law, Describe the most important theories about the causes of criminal behavior, Describe the characteristics of the manifestations of criminal behavior,
