COURSE DESCRIPTION
Course content

The course covers topics through which students become familiar with basic English legal terminology and specific historical and contemporary features of the English and American legal systems, as well as the legal profession and judiciary in the United Kingdom and the United States. Concepts related to basic principles in the Constitution of the Republic of Croatia and the division and functioning of Croatian courts are discussed as well and students become familiar with the terminology of Roman law as the basis of most legal systems in Europe and with the influence of Latin legal terminology on English legal terminology. The above contents are presented to the students through the following texts: A Day in a Civil Court; A Day in a Criminal Court; Roman Civil Procedure; The Importance of a Constitution in the Modern World; Judicial Power in the Republic of Croatia; The Nature and Sources of American Federalism; From the US Constitution; The American Presidency; Supreme Court of the United States. The students learn about the formation and transformation of certain types of words (for example, adjectives and adverbs) and about the formation and use of complex verb tenses and the passive voice.

Course learning outcomes

After completing the course, the students will be able to: Describe and interpret basic legal terminology in English , Compare the division, jurisdiction and way of functioning of English and American courts and their names , Differentiate and evaluate the classification, competences and way of acting of courts in Croatia and courts in the United Kingdom and the USA , Define in English the basic terms and concepts of EU law and English legal terminology, by paraphrasing in English and translating , Apply concepts about the use of complex verb tenses and the formation and use of the passive voice , Correctly compose verb tenses common in everyday communication and in the context of the legal profession , Independently prepare and present in written and oral form a report related to some of the English legal concepts,
