| COURSE DESCRIPTION |

| Course content |
The objectives of the course are to consolidate and expand the acquired knowledge and skills in oral and written communication in the English language, and to acquire English legal terminology related to the origin and organization of the European Union, as well as the functioning of its bodies, institutions, and officials, alongside introducing students to the EU acquis. The course explains the functioning of the European Court of Justice and its associated professional legal terminology. It clarifies the difference between the Council of Europe and the Council of the European Union, provides linguistic analysis and translation of various examples of legal documents and judgments of European courts, and covers the use of linguistic structures characteristic of EU legal language, including the use of the passive voice; 'Eurojargon' is also explained. Speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills in English are developed with an emphasis on the language of the legal profession and EU-related terminology. The goal of the course is to enable students to work independently with original legal documents and to prepare presentations in the form of seminars on topics related to individual chapters of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union. |
