Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to recognize abuse, risk behaviors, emotional crises, and post-traumatic reactions in children—victims of abuse and neglect—who are within the social welfare system; they will learn the fundamentals of handling children exhibiting such symptoms and behaviors; and they will understand the role of the social worker in the prevention of abuse and risk behaviors. The course content covers: the role of prevention in healthy personality development; the role of stressors and trauma; types and consequences of trauma; the legal framework for the protection of children and minors; neglect and emotional abuse; physical abuse; peer abuse; the role of the social worker in prevention; and the social worker's collaboration with parents, teachers, the police, and the community in preventing risk behaviors.
