COURSE DESCRIPTION
Course content

Legal English discourse analysis and usage of legal terminology in English as regards the texts: Crime, Death and the Law, The Death Penalty, Marriage, Divorce, The Legal Character of International Law, The Charter of the UN, The European Court of Justice. The rules of word formation in legal English are introduced with an emphasis on forms typical for the language for specific purposes. An overview of grammatical structures is given and the sequence of tenses in conditional sentences is introduced. The structure and use of relative clauses is dealt with.

Course learning outcomes

distinguish legal English text from that in general language, apply appropriate legal terminology in spoken and written communication, prove understanding of legal texts by answering questions, translating and retelling, correct application of grammatical and lexical structures typical for the English language of the legal profession in the field of criminal, constitutional, family and international law, independently analyze the legal English text, identify key words and write a summary of the text,
